Disorient Express AU Brainstorming

Welcome, dear players, to Grief Street! You've joined us for tonight's episode, The Disorient Express, a murder mystery aboard a train with secrets and inter-character drama galore.

Given the nature of the game and application, we've provided a collaborative space for you to brainstorm with your fellow players about your AU'd characters. This is where you'll be able to figure out who they are, what they're doing here, and also what relationships they might have to other characters on the train. Relationships can be as simple as "Character A and Character B are gossip buddies", or as spicy as "Character A is having an affair with Character B and is plotting to help kill their spouse". Have fun with it!

Character Name: Toshio Ozaki
Canon: Shiki (anime + novel)

Age: 32
Occupation: Doctor --> Infectious disease specialty?
Appearance: Very very casual, slacks and a t-shirt under a white lab coat when he can get away with it. Doesn't sleep much and definitely looks it.

About: Ozaki is the only son of a (very superstitious) small town's only doctor. He studied in a larger city's university and then worked in the hospital in that city until his father became ill. Then he moved back to help the family practice, eventually taking it over when his father passed. In the AU, I think the basics would remain the same, though he probably travels to the cities for conferences, or special lectures on various diseases.


Looking For: Occupational relationships would probably be the easiest, since Ozaki's personality can be rather biting for friends. I'm open to anything though-- rivals, friends, smoke buddies, "hey I saw your lecture on X" things.

Additional Notes: he has a wife (citation needed), smokes, fairly obsessive personality towards puzzle solving, I'm debating having him have an infectious disease background from when he was at the hospital working since as far as I remember it wasn't specified but he's also good at it.

they've got a 12 year age gap, so depending on when he was practicing, maybe he'd recognize Kotoko as a former patient? She spent a little time in the hospital as a child due to nebulous illness (ghosts)

nebulous illness (ghost) sounds like something he would definitely remember-- He was from a very superstitious small town + had parents/family who definitely bought into it, so if she was in the hospital a lot when he worked there he would definitely remember!

artemy is also the son of his very superstitious, small town's only doctor! although the rest of their circumstances are completely different, if you wanted to go with the infectious disease specialty i have the perfect opportunity for a "hey wait, we've met before" coincidence for you: artemy's hometown has suffered two outbreaks of the same highly infectious, highly lethal disease. the first time his father was able to contain it, and this most recent time it fell on artemy to save the town.

it's likely they've studied together, ozaki visited his town to meet with its local doctor(s), or that artemy has attended a conference of his! :3ccc lmk what you think!

That sounds good to me! Ozaki would definitely visit places or intensely study outbreaks like that, and if they ran into each other at a conference he would be sure to recognize the family name and press for more info. He's also generally pretty blunt, so this would either go great or very poorly

We've vaguely discussed this but maybe he and Hu Tao met while one or both of them was traveling, I think they'd have a time debating superstition vs. customs vs. medicine or whatever and also she'd totally harass him to provide some consultation expertise for her funeral business. Undertakers need a li'l medical knowledge, as a treat.

Haha, sounds like a plan-- his only colleagues happy to see him are the ones who work with the dead bodies is a fun trend. They probably chat whenever they find themselves in the same town, trade knowledge and experience.
